FIFA 97 (sometimes FIFA Soccer 97 ) is a video game of soccer released in 1996 that worked on PlayStation , Windows , Game Boy , Mega Drive , Saturn and Super Nintendo . The game was developed by XYZ Productions and edited by EA Sports.

FIFA 97 Game System

The main novelty of the game, other than motion capture, was the indoor football mode. There were six ways to play the game, including outdoor and indoor, as well as simulation modes. The 32-bit AI was used, as well as the motion technology that led to the best graphics in any soccer game of the time. Here, it was possible to play football in a sports hall with the ball bouncing on the walls, which gives a much higher playing rhythm.

The leagues available in the game include the English, French, Italian, German, Dutch, Scottish, Malaysian (M-league) championships as well as American A-League clubs.

Multiplayer mode is also possible with up to 20 players via LAN and 8 players using a modem. The slogan of the game was “FIFA 97, it will take you away. “.

True to its reputation, EA Sports comes back to us at the end of 1996 with the annual episode of the Fifa saga. Acclaimed on consoles of living room, the soccer games of the publisher had until then had a rather mixed reception on the portable machines, largely because of the technical limitations of the support making delicate the adaptation of such titles. Let’s see if Fifa 97, whose box was flanked by David Ginola, one of the stars of French football, manages to break the curse, and to establish itself as a reference in terms of simulation football on portable console …

Always no licenses, but amputated content

If you’ve looked at the previous test, you’re probably already aware that it’s a big disadvantage compared to the declines for salon machines. Indeed, despite the fact that the app was produced under official license of the FIFA, one could only note the absence of the real names of the players of the time. A heresy that was hoped to see corrected with this new opus. Let’s put an end to the suspense: do not expect to find your dear Zidane, Romario and other Batistuta here. This version 97 suffers from the same defect as its big sister. But there is not the most serious! Indeed, where Fifa 96 proposed a plethoric content with no fewer than one hundred and fifty clubs from eight different championships, to national selections! The icing on the cake, they even allow the luxury to be slightly fewer than in Fifa 96. Even before launching any part, the player is therefore expectant, and wonders about the reasons for this blatant reversal.

Let us note however that the three modes of play added to the classic friendly match are the guarantors of a consequent lifespan. We will therefore be able to compete in a championship with a points classification, a cup with knockout matches and a tournament consisting of a skilful mix of the two above-mentioned competitions, with a stage of chickens followed by cleavage (at one year of the World Cup, this was probably an anticipation of the latter). Interestingly, it is now possible to save its progress via a system of passwords. A welcome addition, which will allow you to complete your competitions without having to start from the beginning with each lighting of your Game Boy. The contents of this edition 97 n ‘ remains largely amputated compared to what could be found in the title of the same publisher released the previous year. And rest assured that the massacre does not end there …

FIFA 97 Back to Atari 2600

On the visual front, there is also a clear reversal. Developers were obviously keen to give players more realistic and decomposed animations, much like Prince of Persia had seen in all proportions. If the result in terms of animation is relatively successful, the price to pay is nothing but a drastic reduction in the size of the sprites! Now they FIFA 97are tiny, they offer the player a cold shower as soon as the game is launched, the title seems straight out of the 80’s. Worse still, this decomposed animation has a curious secondary effect and greatly impairs the fluidity of the whole, both and so that one has the feeling to admire flies stuck in honey, especially since the soft even allows slowdowns. A crowning achievement for something so ugly! Only the animations of the bulletin board, appearing in full screen at each marked goal, seem to have gained in variety and finesse, pulling their way of the game. For the rest, one attends once again a massacre of the realized work on Fifa 96.

A soundtrack in tune with the technical realization

The same applies to the soundtrack. Pure but bearable on the previous track, it will curse you the buzzer of your dear Game Boy. The reason is simple: these gentlemen programmers, for the sake of realism, thought it appropriate to add the clamor of the public, even implementing a variation of intensity at the approach of the goals. An interesting idea on most machines of the time, which here turns into a real disaster because of the limited capacities of the small notebook of Nintendo on the sound level. The effect of this decibel effect is to exhort the player to cut the sound again,

FIFA 97 Developers has Some good ideas …

Everything is not to be thrown into Fifa 97. The title contains indeed some interesting ideas that could have contributed to make a reference without its innumerable flaws. First of all, you will have, as always, a plethora of adjustments allowing you to concoct a strategy that will then be implemented in the field. Training, positioning, movements of players without the ball, or composition of the start eleven are all steps that you will have to cross to launch your game. Once these settings are validated, you will discover the second surprise, namely the toss. For the non-fans of football or rugby, know that this is a practice actually exists, and consisting of a part of pile or face disputed between the captains of the two teams that will compete. The winner is entitled to choose his side, or to kick off. In reality, this part of the match can be decisive. A goalkeeper with the sun in his eyes for a whole half-time will indeed be more prone to make mistakes, and many games have switched over to insignificant little details of this order. In Fifa 97, the influence of this choice is minimal, but the presence of this characteristic, which is still absent from the next-gen titles, was another step towards realism. Finally, each game is preceded by a small text presenting the forces involved, with their respective styles of play. After that, place to the field, and gameplay … decisive. Occult-ed by a Gameplay of a rare inaccuracy

And again, the comparison of Fifa 97 with its predecessor is clearly not to the advantage of the first. Indeed, we have here a resumption of all the defects present previously, with in addition new problems appearing in a new way in this new opus. The software is therefore in an isometric view, with a control based on the only two action keys of the console. It is thus possible to shoot or tackle with the first, and to make a pass or to change the selected player with the second one. This is where the first problem arises, with the extremely rough selection of the controlled player! It will not be uncommon for the console to give you a character located outside the screen, instead of the one most able to intercept the ball. In addition, where his predecessor offered the possibility to build a quality collective game (despite the lack of radar limiting the players to short passes, radar also missing in this new opus), Fifa 97 will make you pester on the quality of the finishing passes in a quasi-systematic manner in the opponent’s feet. Even worse: triggering a pass now requires a long press on the dedicated key, causing multiple ball losses by being caught by his defender before he can get rid of the ball. Fifa 97 will pester you on the quality of the passes finishing in an almost systematic way in the feet of the opponent. Given this vagueness, two techniques will be favored by the player. The first is to run straight and try to avoid the opponents. The second, more efficient, will be to get rid of the ball by a strike, then to run to the opponent having recovered it to subtiliser the ball, repeating the operation until one is at range of fire. A process rather rugby, but which gives rise to soporific matches and clearly lacking interest. Similarly, forget the strikes from outside the penalty area. To hope to score, you will have to come closer to the opponent. Another detail that has its importance, the stopwatch is no longer displayed on the game area, forcing you to an unpleasant passage through the menu to know the remaining time. On top of that, and as mentioned above, the Fifa demons are still present. Thus, although each player on the lawn has different characteristics, it is in practice impossible to distinguish the different players from each other, making this specificity unnecessary. You will understand, this crû 97 is very far from being a reference in terms of gameplay and will not fail to cause trouble after a few minutes of play … it is in practice impossible to distinguish the different actors from one another, making this specificity useless. Conclusion

Believe it or not, but I have a very special affection since this is my first game of football, bought loose in a video game store to feed my Game Boy in the course of the but it seemed to me important to emphasize the innumerable defects of this episode, inferior in every respect to his older brother. More ugly, less playable, and endowed with a stark content compared to its predecessor, it is undoubtedly part of Game Boy softs having the worst aged in the history of the video game. To avoid!
